Macao Beach Punta Cana, also known as Playa Macao, is about 45 minutes north of Punta Cana International Airport. It is one of the most popular beaches in the area, where you share the wide sand with local families, surfers waiting for waves, and fishermen pulling in their daily catch.

With golden sand and strong Atlantic waves, Macao feels different from the resort beaches in Punta Cana and Bávaro. It offers a more open and authentic atmosphere, less dominated by resorts

Many Punta Cana buggy tours drive through the countryside and finish at Macao Beach. You can also take a surf lesson, go horseback riding, and enjoy fresh seafood at the beachfront restaurants.

Once a quiet fishing spot, Macao gained attention after Dreams Macao Beach opened in 2020. The upcoming adults-only Secrets Macao will add more luxury, but the beach still keeps its natural beauty and Dominican charm, making it one of the top beaches to experience in Punta Cana. Plan your visit or book a tour to see it for yourself.

Why Visit Macao Beach

Macao Beach is the most well-known public beach in the Punta Cana area. Many beaches in Punta Cana and Bávaro are technically public, but access often goes through large resorts. At Macao, two resorts sit along this beach, but there is still plenty of open space for everyone. You park close to the sand, sometimes even right on it, and walk straight onto the beach without going through a hotel entrance.

The scenery is one of the main reasons people come here. Golden sand meets deep blue water, and the beach feels wide and open. Golden sand meets deep blue Atlantic water, and a rocky cliff rises at one end of the beach, giving you beautiful views along the coast, especially at sunset.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice the smell of fish on the grill. Beach restaurants serve rice, fried plantains, cold Presidente beer, and mojitos just steps from the sand. Nearby stalls sell cigars, Dominican coffee, and small handmade souvenirs.

Because it’s public and easy to reach, Macao is one of the most popular beaches to visit in Punta Cana. It’s perfect if you just want to relax, but for most people, the easiest and most exciting way to experience it is by joining an excursion.

Excursions & Activities at Macao Beach

If you are staying at a resort, the easiest and most popular way to visit Playa Macao is by booking an excursion. Most visitors choose the famous buggy tour, which takes you through the countryside before reaching the beach.

Surfing is another great option. Playa Macao is one of the best surfing spots in Punta Cana and is home to a well-known surf school, making it ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. For a more relaxed experience, you can go horseback riding along the shore and enjoy the natural scenery.

💡 Tip: Don’t Overpay at the Resort Tour Desk. Resort tour desks are easy to use, but prices are often higher and the choices more limited. The smarter move is to compare and book your excursion online before you arrive.

On Viator, part of Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel review site with over 300,000 experiences worldwide, you can see prices clearly listed in U.S. dollars, compare multiple operators, read verified reviews, and check exactly what’s included. You also see pickup times and full details before you book. Many tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Dune Buggy and ATV Adventures

Macao Beach is famous for its buggy and ATV tours. These trips take you off-road through muddy tracks, palm groves, and even hidden caves, before ending with a swim in the ocean. It is messy, fun, and one of the most popular excursions in Punta Cana.

Surfing

Macao Beach is one of the best surfing spots in the Dominican Republic. Unlike other beaches in Punta Cana, it has waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. You can rent boards or take lessons at Macao Surf Camp, which offers classes for all levels.

Horseback Riding

Few experiences compare to riding a horse along the wide, beautiful beach of Macao. The ride goes as well to nearby villages or cocoa farms, giving you a glimpse of Dominican culture.

Tips for Visiting Macao Beach

Getting There & Parking

Macao is easily accessible from most resorts in Punta Cana and Bávaro, approximately a 30-minute drive by car. If you’re driving, take Autovía Frank Rainieri toward Miches and follow the signs for Playa Macao.

Macao has a main parking area, and parking is completely free. Local helpers are usually around to guide you into a spot and may expect a small tip, which is normal here. If you’re driving a jeep or SUV, you can take the dirt road and even park on the sand

For more options like taxis, Uber, rentals, and local buses, see our Transportation Guide for the Dominican Republic.

Best Time to Visit

If you want fewer people, go early on a weekday. Before 11 am, it’s easier to park close and find a good spot on the sand. Late morning and early afternoon are the busiest. This is when most buggy and ATV tours stop at the beach. Weekends are crowded when local families come for the day.

Cash, ATMs & Payments

There is no ATM at Macao Beach, and credit cards are not reliable at the beach. Bring cash in small bills. For practical tips on cash, tipping, and what to pay in pesos vs USD, see our Money Guide.

Vendors & Prices

Vendors walk along Macao Beach selling hats, sunglasses, bracelets, and small souvenirs. You’ll hear “Amigo!” or “Special price!” as they pass. If you’re not interested, just smile and say “No, gracias.” They’ll move on. When you do want to buy something, always ask the price first. Then offer around 50% of the first price and see what happens. Negotiating is normal here.

Stick to small items like hats or simple souvenirs. Avoid buying cigars or jewelry on the beach. The quality is often low, and prices are usually high. If you want better options, check our shopping in the Dominican Republic section and what to buy as authentic souvenirs.

If you decide to eat at one of the beach restaurants, expect tourist prices. Around 28% is added to the bill in the Dominican Republic — 18% tax and 10% service charge. Always check the menu and know the final price before you order.

What to Bring

Macao is a public beach, so it’s best to come prepared. Bring:

  • Cash (small bills)

  • Sunscreen and a hat

  • Water (especially midday)

  • Towel

  • Sunglasses

  • Light cover-up for the drive back

  • A small bag you can keep close

  • Water shoes if you plan to walk near rocky areas

  • Change of clothes if you’re coming from an excursion

💡 Tip: Before you travel to Punta Cana, consider ordering these three beach essentials on Amazon. today. They’re simple things, but they make a big difference, for example, on a trip to Macao.

✔ Waterproof dry bag – If you’re swimming or doing a buggy tour at Macao, don’t leave your phone and wallet in a regular beach bag. A roll-top dry bag seals tightly and keeps water and sand out, even if it gets splashed. It’s lightweight, easy to carry over your shoulder, and comes with a waterproof phone pouch included. Buy it now

✔ SPF 50+ Sunscreen – Bring your own. Resort and beach shops in Punta Cana regularly charge $30 to $40 for one bottle. You’ll need it from day one, so it’s smarter to pack it before you leave instead of paying hotel prices. Add it to your suitcase today.

Lightweight microfiber beach towel – Some resorts don’t allow guests to take towels off property. A microfiber towel is lightweight, dries quickly, and takes up almost no space in your bag. Order a travel beach towel here.

Waves & Safety

Macao faces the Atlantic, so the waves are stronger than in Bávaro or Punta Cana. Take a minute to look at the water before you go in, and stay near the shore if the waves look rough. There are no lifeguards, so don’t let children swim alone and be careful if you’re not a strong swimmer. When the beach gets crowded, don’t leave your belongings unattended. For more safety tips, see our Dominican Republic Beach Safety Guide.

Sargassum Season

During the sargassum (seaweed) season, some people check Macao because it can sometimes have less sargassum than parts of Bávaro. It’s not guaranteed, but it can be a good option if your resort beach has heavy Sargassum. Read more in our Sargassum Season page.
